NEARBY PLACES OF INTEREST

Within walking distance:
Bar Island - Looking out the front window, there is an island just to the left called Bar Island. At low tide (and for about 2 hours each side of low tide), you can walk out to the island and find periwinkles, clams, mussels, etc.  Eagles often frequent the island and land on the treetops to eat their catch.  You can watch them with the telescope or the binoculars provided by the cottage.  The telescope is also great for spotting seals sunning on Ballast Island further out (look for "shiny rocks" that move).
Sandy River Beach -
Just a quarter of a mile north of the cottage near the shore side of Bar Island is a lovely white sand beach – nice for taking a swim, a walk or for beach-combing.  If you choose to drive, there is free parking across the road from the Beach.

A short drive :

Jonesport - An authentic working "Down East" fishing community, with a picturesque harbor full of lobster boats.  Go to the local Fisherman's Coop to buy fresh lobster directly from the fishermen on the dock, or drive over the short bridge to Beals Island, where you can have a tasty lunch at Bay View Take-Out.  Also on Beals Island are the Wass Island Nature Conservancy Trails.  You can get groceries at Manaford's in Jonesport, or any of several small convenience stores around town (some of these also sell gas).

Machias - The closest large town, it is only 20 minutes from the cottage.  Machias has a well-stocked supermarket (Hanafords), with a pharmacy nearby.  There are also several excellent restaurants in Machias, including Helen's (recommended),the Riverside Inn and Restaurant, and the Bluebird Ranch Restaurant.  For a high-end dining experience, the Chandler River Lodge can be found on the road between Jonesport and Machias.   (NOTE: call ahead for restaurant's schedules... some are only open seasonally).  There are also several smaller eateries  in and around Machias (even a McDonalds). In case of emergency, Down East Hospital in Machias provides excellent health care for the region. There is also a laundromat in Machias, and a well-stocked wine store next door to it.

Bad Little Falls Park, Machias - Falls are on one of the last great Atlantic Salmon rivers in the East.

Jasper Beach, Machiasport - Walk on the beach where pebbles are abundant with jasper, after which the beach is named.

Roque Bluffs State Park and Beach – Mile long sandy beach. Ocean & fresh water swimming; restrooms. Take Hwy 187 to Hwy 1. Drive north through Jonesboro and take a right when you see the sign to Roque Bluffs State Park.

Indian Pictographs, Machiasport - Boat excursion to view ancient rock carvings made by early local indians dating back 3,000 years;

Blueberry Barrens, Columbia Falls, Centerville - 12,000 acres of wild blueberry land. Blossoms in June and harvest (raking) in August (also in Cherryfield and Harrington).
